The three federal deductions
- Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026 (maximum $11,439).
- Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax withheld on wages over $200,000.
- Federal income tax: progressive brackets of 10% to 37% on income after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction.
Your marginal rate (the bracket your last dollar falls in) is higher than your average rate. A single filer earning $65,000 is in the 12% bracket but pays far less than 12% of gross in income tax, because of the standard deduction and the lower bracket.

Frequently asked questions
What percent of my paycheck goes to federal taxes?
For a single filer, roughly 15% at $50,000 and 21% at $100,000, including Social Security and Medicare (2026).
What is FICA on a paycheck?
7.65%: 6.2% Social Security plus 1.45% Medicare. Your employer pays the same amount again.
Why was no federal income tax withheld?
If your annualized pay is below the standard deduction, or your W-4 claims enough credits, withholding can be zero. Social Security and Medicare still apply.
